A two-channel version of the multi-channel audio piece “Hinterland” by Mississauga sound artist Daniel Ottini will be presented as part of the 2026 RADIOPHRENIA festival line-up.

RADIOPHRENIA is a radio art collective, festival and art radio station broadcasting intermittently across Glasgow on 87.9FM and online; the station aims to promote radio as an art form, encouraging challenging and radical new approaches to the medium.

The listening festival will be taking place over 16 days (from September 5th-20th, 2026) on Glasgow FM 87.9 and via digital broadcast from Scotland.

Hin-ter-land (definition): the land behind a city or a port

The piece explores the odd landscape of a naturalized area wedged between an airport and an industrial zone.

Along the edge of Toronto Pearson airport, the Etobicoke creek runs through a naturalized area with a significant wildlife population; the area also contains several zones for airport operations and an industrial area.

Employing in situ field recordings, the piece transitions from the sounds of the natural word into the increasingly invasive sonic artifacts of human life; at first somewhat benignly, then increasing in intensity.

There is a strange crossover between the natural and human-made worlds, with wildlife, high noise levels, jet exhaust, and the equally invasive sound and odour from the industrial zone, intertwined; the natural world is preserved, but one wonders at what cost to the species that live (or could have lived) here.

Daniel Ottini is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist exploring the deeper questions that shape human emotion and lived experience, using sound in all its forms as a medium for inquiry and expression.

His artistic practice spans multichannel installation, signal‑based media, and experimental composition, utilizing documentary audio, field recordings, electronic textures, and spatial sound to engage the listener’s perspective in an immersive yet non‑didactic manner.
