Hand-built clay: From basics to beyond

Explore the art of hand-building with clay in this four-week creative series designed for beginners and curious makers. Participants will learn foundational vessel-building techniques using air-dry clay, starting with simple cup forms and surface etching, then progressing into pattern making. This relaxed, skill-building series offers a supportive environment to experiment, develop new techniques and create handmade works.
Program outline:
Week 1 – Create a simple cup using etching techniques
Week 2 – Create a cup using repeating patterns and negative space
Week 3 – Final project of your choosing with guidance
Week 4 – Paint all three projects and apply durable waterproof varnish

• Public: $80 +HST, Members: $68 +HST.
• Recommended for ages 16 and up.
• This is a workshop series that builds on each week, you must register for the whole series. At the end of the series, you will have 3 completed projects (not food safe).
• You will also have opportunities to visit PAMA exhibitions or explore the collections throughout the series to gain inspiration for your projects.
• Minimum of 5 registrants required for program to run.
About the Artist: Sierra is an emerging ceramics artist and art educator who teaches across Peel Region and leads workshops for all ages in her role as an Educator at PAMA. Sierra’s clay art classes cover a range of traditional pottery techniques used to make cups, bowls, animals, masks and more.
