The Local is looking for a talented journalist to join our team as a staff reporter covering civic issues in Mississauga and Brampton.
The Local is an award-winning online publication devoted to civic issues in the GTA, with an emphasis on magazine-style journalism and reporting from local communities. We publish in-depth features, investigations, essays, data journalism, commentary, and more.
Since our launch in 2019, The Local has been recognized with some of the highest honours in Canadian journalism, including multiple National Magazine Awards, the Canadian Journalism Foundation’s Jackman Award for Excellence, and the award for General Excellence in Digital Publishing (Small Publication) in four of the past five years. We are a team of six staff and an extensive network of freelance contributors working within a warm, collaborative, and collegial newsroom environment.
We are seeking a passionate, civic-minded, and resourceful staff reporter who has a strong connection to and knowledge of communities in Peel. This person will report from Brampton and Mississauga, bringing fresh ideas and captivating storytelling skills to help our readers make sense of these growing communities. They’ll help lead our coverage of the 2026 municipal elections in those cities.
