PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont, U.S.A., has accepted a photograph of ecmunson’s captured over four decades ago in their upcoming exhibition, Analog – Made by Hand, which will hang from April 3 – 25, 2026.
Her B&W piece, Old Apple Trees, was shot in the early 1980’s on an abandoned Old Order Mennonite farm northwest of Waterloo, Ontario. The quiet laneway back into the farm had not hydro nor phone lines going into the property. It was a favourite haunt of Munson’s for tramping about with her cameras, friends, and current dog.
A step back in time with only two walls of the large stone house standing, the barn foundations had settled back into the earth with encroaching grasses and shrubs covering them. The orchard had a few trees left and was particularly compelling in spring with its apple blossoms.
That day in late winter was warm but near dusk there was more snow coming. The air was heavy with moisture which made the photograph very atmospheric and soft. The film used was Ektachrome slide in an all manual camera, Pentax K1000 with a 100 Macro Takumar lens.
The slide was sent out to a lab to have an inter-neg made. Munson made her first B&W print with this interneg in her Kitchener darkroom. This actual hand-made 35 year old print hung in the Ontario Legislative Assembly in Queens Park circa 2017. The piece has since been digitally scanned at 3600 dpi with a Ltd. Ed. series of 50 giclee prints made on Velvet 310 GSM, an archival arts paper using archival quality pigmented inks.
Old Apple Trees, will hang in the Virtual Gallery as one of 40 pieces accepted for this show. The bricks ‘n mortar gallery will show 35 pieces. The image will remain permanently on the PhotoPlace Gallery’s website, available to people world-wide to enjoy or order a print.
