A Community Theatre Production Raising Awareness About Mental Health in the Black Community

Are you passionate about theatre, teamwork, or community wellness?
We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the Piece of Mind production team! No prior theatre experience is needed—just a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. All rehearsals are held in Brampton, Ontario.

Volunteer Roles Available
  • Stage Manager Assistant
    • Help keep the production organized and running smoothly! 
    • You’ll work closely with the Stage Manager to track cues, assist with schedules, and coordinate backstage transitions. 
    • A great role for anyone interested in leadership, organization, or event coordination
  • Lighting Crew
    • Bring the story to life through light and mood!
    • You’ll assist in setting up, operating, and managing lighting equipment during rehearsals and performances.
    • Perfect for someone curious about the technical side of theatre—training provided!
  • Backstage Hands
    • Be part of the magic behind the scenes! 
    • Help manage props, move sets, and support the cast and crew during performances. This is a fun, active role for reliable team players who enjoy working behind the curtain.

    • Build your portfolio with professional theatre photography. 
    • Contribute to a meaningful community arts project.

Location: Rehearsals take place in Brampton, Ontario and performances in Mississauga Feb 21, & Toronto, March 7, 2026 

Time Commitment: Rehearsals (evenings and weekends) and performance dates

Backstage Hand – “Piece of Mind” Community Theatre Production

Position Overview:

The Backstage Hand will provide essential behind-the-scenes support for Piece of Mind, a  community stage production dedicated to raising awareness about mental health in the Black  community. This volunteer role helps ensure that performances run smoothly by assisting with  set changes, props, and other production needs. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Help set up and strike the stage before and after each performance. 
  • Organize and manage props and set pieces for quick and efficient scene changes.
  • Support the technical and stage teams with lighting, sound, and other production elements as needed. 
  • Follow cues and instructions from the Stage Manager and Technical Director during  rehearsals and performances. 
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe backstage environment. 
  • Assist performers with transitions or costume changes when required. 

Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow directions well. 
  • Positive attitude and strong teamwork skills. 
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. 
  • No prior experience necessary—training will be provided. 

Commitment:

Volunteer role during scheduled rehearsals and a small honorarium during live performances. A  great opportunity to gain hands-on theatre experience and be part of a meaningful community  project.


 

Stage Manager Assistant – “Piece of Mind” Community Theatre Production

Position Overview: 

The Stage Manager Assistant will work closely with the Stage Manager to ensure all aspects of  Piece of Mind run smoothly during rehearsals and live performances. This volunteer role  supports communication between the cast and crew, helps organize schedules, and assists with  coordination backstage. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the Stage Manager in organizing and communicating rehearsal and performance  schedules. 
  • Take notes during rehearsals and help track cues and stage directions. Ensure props and set pieces are in place before each scene. 
  • Communicate stage cues to crew members and performers. 
  • Support backstage transitions and maintain order during performances.

Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Strong organizational and communication skills. 
  • Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to multitask under pressure. 
  • Team player with a positive attitude. 
  • No prior theatre experience required—training will be provided. 

Commitment: 

Volunteer role during scheduled rehearsals and a small honorarium during performance nights.  Great opportunity for those interested in stage management or production coordination.


 

Lighting Crew – “Piece of Mind” Community Theatre Production

Position Overview: 

The Lighting Crew will help create the atmosphere and emotional tone of Piece of Mind through  lighting effects and cues. This volunteer role supports the Technical Director in setting up,  operating, and managing lighting equipment during rehearsals and performances. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with setting up and focusing stage lights before performances. 
  • Operate lighting controls during rehearsals and shows following cue sheets. Support the Technical Director in maintaining and testing lighting equipment. Adjust and troubleshoot lighting setups as needed. 
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed when handling lighting equipment. Qualifications & Skills: 
  • Interest in stage lighting and technical theatre. 
  • Willingness to learn and follow detailed instructions. 
  • Reliable, punctual, and attentive to cues. 
  • No prior experience necessary—training will be provided.

Photographer – “Piece of Mind” Community Theatre Production 

Position Overview: 

The Photographer will capture the visual story of Piece of Mind, a community stage production dedicated  to raising awareness about mental health in the Black community. This volunteer role involves taking  professional headshots of the cast and crew, as well as candid and action shots during rehearsals and live  performances. The images will be used for promotional materials, programs, social media, and archival  purposes. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Capture high-quality headshots of cast and crew members for promotional and program use. 
  • Photograph rehearsals, documenting behind-the-scenes moments that reflect the creative  process. 
  • Take performance photos during show dates, including key dramatic scenes, audience  engagement, and stage visuals. 
  • Work closely with the Director, Stage Manager, and Promotions Team to ensure all photography  aligns with the production’s tone and goals. 
  • Organize, edit, and deliver digital images in a timely manner for marketing and archival use. 
  • Maintain professionalism and respect the privacy and comfort of cast and crew during photo  sessions. 

Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Experience in portrait and/or event photography preferred. 
  • Strong attention to detail, creativity, and visual storytelling. 
  • Ability to work discreetly during live performances and rehearsals. 
  • Must have access to own photography equipment. 
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to meet deadlines. 

Commitment: 

Volunteer position during scheduled rehearsals and small honorarium for performance dates. Flexible  schedule with some evening and weekend commitments.
