The Streetsville Founderโs Bread and Honey Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary last year as the largest and longest running festival in Mississauga. It is also recognized as an Ontario Top 100 festival by Festivals and Events Ontario. This year the festival will be held from Friday, May 31st to Sunday, June 2nd, 2024.
The festival originated in 1973 and commemorates the history of founder Timothy Street; attendees show up to support the yearly festival at Streetsville Memorial Park. Each year at the festival, everyone enjoys bread that is baked specially by the two existing milling companies and generously coated with local honey, hence the name.
Filled with local businesses, artisans and supporters, the festival highlights the importance of community involvement and is set in the beautiful natural spaces of the downtown Streetsville area.
Some events to highlight as we get closer to the first weekend of June include the Beauty of Bees Art Exhibition and the Next Gen: Singing Contest (formely Sauga Teens Got Talent). Mississauga Arts Council has been running these two key events with this festival for many years and is thrilled to be hosting them again this year.
The Beauty of Bees Art Exhibition aims to raise the importance of preserving our pollinating bee population. Local artists will be exhibiting their work and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Given that itโs Mississaugaโs 50th anniversary this year, the artwork will celebrate that alongside themes of nature, bees, and spring of course. Artists will have their work on display which you can experience out in the open air and even vote for Peopleโs Choice! Check out local artists and their work on June 2nd, 2024 at the Pollinator Garden during the festival.
The Next Gen: Singing Contest is a yearly juried singing competition for youth produced by Mississauga Arts Council, and sponsored by Metalworks Studios and Metalworks Institute. Selected vocalists between the ages of 16-22 will perform in front of a jury in which 3 winners will be selected. There is prize money and fantastic experience courses to be won from Metalworks. See these young artists perform on the Community Stage June 1st, 2024.
Throughout the festival, there will be performances from many different artists, singers and performers on two stages: the Main Stage and the Kids Stage. The Kids Stage will feature childrenโs icons like Anna (Frozen) and Moana (Moana) meet and greets while the Main Stage will have musicians from performing genres like Latin to Celtic Rock and switching every hour.
