CALL FOR CURATOR OF CONTEMPORARY ART
ART GALLERY OF MISSISSAUGA
The Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM) seeks a vibrant, creative and experienced individual with a profound knowledge of contemporary art, art history and current artistic trends, to lead the AGM into a higher level of regional and national prominence.
This role is responsible for leading and managing the contemporary art program at the Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM). In the position of Art Gallery of Mississauga Curator, you will bring strength to the AGM’s programming and will act as the architect of the visitor experience using the collection to inspire learning, lead engagement through an anti-oppressive, and anti-racist lens. Your expertise will help continue to shape Mississauga’s contemporary arts collection with a management strategy to address the gaps in the collection, assess for improvements to collection storage areas and support initiatives to increase public access. You’ll provide guidance and oversight into the collection spaces including layout, design, planning, display. You’ll work with the team to determine the calendar for all exhibitions while working closely and collaboratively with diverse audiences to tell stories inclusive of the AGM First, New, Next platform.
In your role you will maintain overall responsibility for the education portfolio, ensuring that programing meets the Ontario school curriculum requirements, new technologies, virtual and in person, and best practices. You’ll also develop and oversee content creation for publications for the gallery. You will have some knowledge base with indigenous art.
The AGM Curator will need be the following key qualifications and experience to succeed:
- Post-secondary degree in a related discipline, i.e., Art History, History, Museum Studies (Masters or Ph. D. considered an asset) or the equivalent combination of education and lived experience.
- Minimum 5 years curatorial experience; including exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions.
- Proven record of achievements in exhibitions, publications and/or publications editing; exemplary experience preparing and delivering lectures, conferences, panels, and workshops to the public, professional colleagues, and other groups
- Experience with museum and exhibition management – produce 10-13 exhibitions per calendar year; including long-term planning, project management, grant writing, budget management, political acuity, and policy development.
- Considerable experience with qualitative and quantitative research in a related field (Published research to be considered an asset).
- Exceptional research, and verbal and written communication skills; including social media aptitude and compelling public speaking abilities
- Demonstrated success and appreciation for sponsorship and fundraising; ability to galvanize support and generate excitement while effectively partnering with staff and stakeholders in the process
An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal and customer service skills, you’re adept at facilitating effective presentations and at working effectively, with, and supporting multiple stakeholders (e.g., community, donors, collectors, artists, gallery owners, curators, and scholars). These skills will be complemented by your sound judgment and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines in an environment with shifting priorities. In addition to this, you also bring to the table highly developed research and writing skills.
In this role you will act as an ambassador upholding the values of the AGM to ensure a diverse and respectful culture that champions equity.
The position requires a commitment of 28 hours per week and would require availability onsite during AGM hours with the flexibility of non-traditional hours around engagement opportunities, events and programming. May require some travel. The position is a one-year contract with potential for extension.
